Being a metropolitan, bustling city, Cambridge always has a great deal happening. Whatever your preference – music, art or comedy – there’s a huge range of special and ongoing events that’s sure to pique your interest.
July is no exception and it is a month with a particularly strong, varied collection of things to do, so you will probably be spoilt for choice. So, let’s look at what’s going on this month.
Cambridge Summer Music Presents Patrick Hemmerlé
Renowned pianist Patrick Hemmerlé is returning for his second crack at Cambridge classic music lovers, after the roaring success of his 2017 visit.
Hemmerlé will be performing entire works from Chopin and Debussy, wowing you with this masterly playing and bringing much-loved classics of the genre to life. Held in the beautiful surroundings of Robinson College Chapel, it promises to match his performance of last year and deliver more world-class performances in intimate confines. It’s the perfect afters to The Tamburlaine Afternoon tea, so indulge yourself and then head out for some wonderfully performed classic music.
Only a ten-minute journey from The Tamburlaine Hotel, it promises to be a magical evening of peerless musical performance.
Cambridge Comedy Festival
Most cities have a comedy festival these days, and Cambridge Comedy Festival is quickly marking itself out as one of the best.
With all gigs taking place in the beautiful Jesus Green, the festival runs from the 20th to 24th July, with established and new acts all on show. Many of the talents on show will be honing their acts for the Edinburgh Festival and indeed there is an ‘Edinburgh Preview’ tent on-site. Previous comedy talent coming out of Cambridge includes famous names like Peter Cooke, Jimmy Carr and David Mitchell, so you’re bound to catch a new act that will likely be up in lights in the near future.
It’s a great place to catch names you know and you will know soon, and all a short journey from some of the best restaurants in Cambridge, so you can head off for some food after the belly laughs.
The Big Weekend
Taking place from 13th to 15th July, The Big Weekend delivers new, well-known and tribute acts, all delivering an awesome weekend of music in a friendly atmosphere.
Held at Parker’s Piece, it’s a 10-minute walk from The Tamburlaine Hotel and offers a great experience whether you just want to check out one day or take in the whole thing.
In 2018, performers include local favourites Swagger, Dub legend Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Mad Professor and what is widely regarded as the premier Elton John tribute – Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Bands.
Covering a wide range of musical styles and genres, the vibe of The Big Weekend is relaxed and family-friendly. So you don’t need to worry about taking the kids along – they’re more than welcome and will be safe.
There is a bevvy of additional activities for adults and kids to enjoy, from food stalls to face painting, and a French market. It’s a great weekend and well worth checking out.
